Gear Gossip

From mention to score

  1. Collect mentions. Each opinion about one aspect of one product is one row: the aspect, the sentiment from minus 2 to plus 2, the source type, the date, a short quote and a link to where it was said.
  2. Weight the source. Long-term owner posts (6+ months of use) count 1.5. Verified-purchase retailer reviews, forum and Reddit owner posts and YouTube owner comments count 1.0. Brand-site reviews count 0.5. Incentivized and free-product reviews are excluded, and so are opinions from people who don't own it. Expert reviews are scored separately and only feed the Hype Gap.
  3. Score each aspect. Weighted average sentiment per aspect, mapped from minus 2 to plus 2 onto 0 to 100. An aspect with fewer than 3 weighted mentions leans toward the category's average for that aspect.
  4. Apply the category weights below. Every product in a category uses the same weights.
  5. Shrink small samples toward the category average with the formula on this page, so a dozen glowing reviews can't beat nine hundred good ones.
  6. Label confidence. Low under 50 weighted mentions, Medium from 50 to 200, High over 200.
  7. Handle time. Mentions older than 24 months count half. A redesigned product gets a new version with its own score.
Score =n·x̄ + m·Cn + m

n is the weighted mention count, x̄ is the product's raw weighted score, C is the average of the category's Medium and High confidence products (padded with two placeholder products at 65, so a young category can't set its own bar) and m is the prior strength, set at 50.

Side metrics

Hype Gap: expert score minus owner score. Plus 15 or more earns Overhyped; minus 15 or less earns Sleeper Hit. It needs at least 2 expert reviews.

Regret Rate: the share of negative owner mentions that describe a failure or regret after 3 or more months of use. Shown once a product has at least 5 negative owner mentions.

Best-for lists

A best-for list (best power station for home backup, best beach shade for wind) uses the same owner mentions and the same aspect scores as the main board. Only the weights change, to match what matters for that use. The list score is shrunk toward the category average the same way as the Gossip Score, so a thin sample can't top a list. Some lists only include products with a feature, like wheels. When owners say what they use a product for, we show what those owners said.

Brand lists (best EcoFlow, best YETI) rank one brand's models by their regular Gossip Score. A list opens once it has 5 products with enough owner mentions, or 3 for a brand.

Where the data comes from

We read individual public pages: expert reviews, retailer and brand reviews outside Amazon, owner forums, Reddit threads found through search, and YouTube reviews and comments. Every quote is a sentence or less and links to where it was said.

We read Amazon reviews by hand for themes only. We never copy Amazon review text, star ratings or images, and we don't bulk-scrape any site.

What money can't buy

We earn affiliate commissions when you buy through our links. Brands can't pay for a score, a badge or a ranking, and a score never changes because of a commission. Sponsored newsletter slots, if we ever run them, are labeled.
